After his partner is killed and girlfriend takes off, Chicago homicide detective Ryan Doherty has one last chance to save his career with the double murder of ad execs Scott and Carly Redding. Ryan quickly learns that life wasn't so lush at the Reddings' agency, Town Red Media, where the list of ex-employees runs fifteen pages long.  At the top of this list is Catharine Lulling, a former Vice President at Town Red.

He becomes obsessed with Catharine from their first meeting. She is charming, intelligent, wealthy, and possesses abilities even he can't understand. Catharine draws Ryan into her unconventional world where he will risk the case-and his life-to find out if she's for real, or if she's the real killer.

This is the first book in the Ryan Doherty mystery series.

Town Red Jennifer Moss Books

I've read the entire series. The are my three favorite subject matters all rolled into one nice story line. It's a great murder mystery, a bit of love interest and a tad supernatural. They are a quick read with a good pace, nice character development and not overly drawn out. To be honest I was hesitant to read them at first because she is a friend. (what if they sucked - should I tell her?) But they really are good!!! If I didn't know her, I'd still follow her work. Now I just whine because I need more Ryan and Catherine plots so I'm just patiently waiting for the next book.

I would say it's best to start at the beginning as they do progress in order. Don't skip present tense the novella, it made me tear up (shhh don't tell).

Town Red Jennifer Moss Books Reviews

Loved the banter between partners. Nicely paced. I'll be reading more of her books.
I love detective mysteries & this one was EXCELLENT!
Great to know the author too! I can't wait to read the next one!
Captivating, enjoyable, wrapped with humor and suspense. I can really wrap my head around the characters and become involved in the investigation. Jennifer's ability to paint with words has me rethinking how I want to remodel my house. She does a great job with character development and how they live, interact and evolve.
This draws you in from the first page and keeps you guessing the whole way.
Not a simple feat to blend a police procedural with a believeable
psychic energy theme but Moss pulls it off.
Just when I thought every loose end was tied up, there was still more.
Already bought the next book in this series.
(Light spoilers)

Overall I liked this book. It was a quick read and the characters were interesting enough to keep me wanting to learn more about them. The police procedural plays out effectively without feeling like a ripoff of Law & Order.

I think it falls apart a little near the rising action and end when the author hints at darker forces at work but never really fully explores this vein, denying the reader a certain level of pay-off.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Town Red. It was this month's selection for the bookclub I belong to, and the reads don't always appeal to me, but this book really did! It has all you'd want in a murder detective story, plus some metaphysical intrigue and a little bit of romance, too. I was worried that the romance would overshadow the rest of the story, but it really serves to help build up the characters into 3-dimensional people, and makes you want to continue the series to see what happens to them next. Fantastic book!
I lived in Chicago for many years and am therefore always reluctant to read a book or watch a movie set in the Windy City. I often find a lot of mistakes--geographic descriptions that don't fit, voices that don't sound authentic, that sort of thing. What a welcome surprise to have a book set in Chicago and Evanston that actually depicts those areas! I feel like Det. Doherty lived in the apartment building right next to me in my old Rogers Park condo!

Once that concern was out of the way, I was riveted to the story. I don't generally read a lot of murder mysteries because I usually figure it all out and just when I thought I had, Ms. Moss surprised me again, by totally changing direction and revealing an unexpected ending. Hooray!

I found the characters believable and the plot true-enough-to-life that I wasn't even bothered by the slight metaphysical aspect to it (something which would normally turn me off). I read this in about 12 hours; I honestly couldn't put It down.

This is an excellent first novel and I hope to read more about Det. Doherty and the 18th.
