Unzipping the Digital World is a revealing new book by Keith Willetts that gives an eye-opening view into how to thrive and survive in the rapidly evolving digital economy that is permanently changing the world. Packed with practical advice on every page and written in a highly readable and non-technical style, this book is “must read” for anyone involved in creating and delivering communications, cloud or application services.
The book begins by Willetts outlining digital economy drivers including the massive rise in global connectivity, the rapid evolution of cloud services, and the enormous advances in smart devices - not just smartphones and tablets, but connected devices embedded in everything from cars to heart monitors. Ultimately, he claims, the digital economy is enabling major changes in our lives in what we buy, how we do business, how we are governed, our education, healthcare, entertainment, interaction with others, and in our homes and offices.
As the digital world ushers in the most profound shift since the invention of printing press, opportunities and threats abound. Willetts describes the emerging structure of the market – specifically the communications sector – being a key enabler of the digital world yet facing serious threats to its core products and services. He offers detailed advice on where companies should position themselves, how they can exploit enterprise-based digital services and what core competencies they need to have to thrive.
The book continues, offering a practical ‘self-help’ guide to the transformation that existing players need to undertake in order to thrive. Learning to move more quickly, become highly innovative, deliver an outstanding customer experience, and manage sustainable ‘win-win’ partnerships are paramount to success, Willetts opines, with a critical need for in-depth software skills in the software dominated digital world. He describes how to deliver the essential highly integrated and automated operational systems and processes that can operate across the whole value chain. At the same time he advocates the need for visionary leadership and the evolution of a truly open digital economy that allows the open flow of digital goods and encourages regulators to refocus efforts away from their traditional role of constraint.
There is no doubt transformation to the digital world is happening fast. Willetts unzips the market with a ‘no holds barred’ picture of what today’s giants need to do to thrive and survive and presents a series of practical steps on how to exploit the massive opportunities the digital economy presents.

Unzipping the Digital World How to Thrive and Survive Keith Willetts eBook
The fact that it was known Keith was writing a new book to look forward, as his first book, "The Lean Communications Proivder", did when it came out, was the source of much buzz and anticipation in the industry. It was well worth the wait! What I hope for and expect from a book of this type is that I learn something and have my confirmed biases challenged. It's a nice-to-have if it's also entertaining. Five stars on all counts. On that last, I appreciate how hard that can be, having been invited to write a book many years ago and abandoning it upon reading my own manuscript and finding it too boring to read. Thanks, Keith, for bringing your irrepressible good humor and fine command of the language to a sometimes-dry subject.
The more I read of this book, the more it brought back a seminal moment in my early career when I attended a lecture by Dr. John Donovan called "The Computer is Free". That lecture influenced my thinking and descision process over the next five decades of my career in the industry. I sense that this book will provide that sort of persistent insight value for people at an earlier stage of their careers in this wonderful industry.
Beyond the general, I find many of the structural models of the Digital World and the roles of the players to be useful in my own work, so there's something in this book for the grizzled veteran as well. Also, several themes resonated with ones I have held dear as I advise and execute strategies, among them the Leadership and Partnership themes. One of my favorite metaphors in the former is that of the Able Pilot from Eileen C. Shapiro's "Fad Surfing in the Boardroom", and Keith's observations and advice in this quarter are evocative of that metaphor. The work of Womack and Jones on Lean Thinking and Seeing the Whole Value Stream are very supportive of Keith's discussion of Partnership.
All-in-all, this book is one of which it will be difficult, after reading it, to remain neutral on its major points, but that's the point, isn't it? Few of us have access to the thought-leaders in the industry, and few of them share their thoughts so widely, so I'd recommend you not squander this rare opportunity--buy and read this whole book!

Unzipping the Digital World How to Thrive and Survive Keith Willetts eBook Reviews
Very clear analysis of the fast transformation of the communication industry into a new digital world where the rules of the game are being reinvented. Very insightful with plenty of colorful examples to articulate the thoughts. I enjoyed particularly the "Oklahoma Land Race" as a very inspiring metaphor.
Keith Willetts starts with a thorough understanding of the economic driving forces that shape the communication and digital industry today
- where it appears that performance of the past is no indicator for the future
- where we can understand the drivers behind the rise of new "infomediaries" (like apple, , facebook and twitter) taking a proeminent role in consumer customer relationship
- where the traditionnal voice and SMS market of CSP (communication service providers) is at stake and where new business models need to be invented
- where B2B and wholesale markets give new opportunities to build verticals and powerful value chains in cooperation with partners
But all this needs clear choices, out of the box thinking, speed of execution, strong partnerships and open innovation.
A very greatful thanks to Keith Willetts for this very clear, lucid and positive journey into this new world of digital services that will transform very rapidly not only the communication and IT industry but will impact the whole economy. Let's get on our wagon in this new version of the Oklahoma Land Race! Many thanks Keith for this insightful and thrilling book.
An extremely well-argued and enjoyable polemic not merely about what communications service providers worldwide must do to survive, but more importantly about the waves of creativity that are driving countless new digital services that both benefit and intrigue people worldwide. From the perspective of a professional life spent in telecommunications, Willetts conveys enthusiasm about the future of the digital world in general, as well as Cassandra-like warnings that telcos must transform or be left in the dust. Neither cheerleader nor Jeremiah, he offers practical advice for industry leaders who want to enable their companies to go well beyond survival, indeed to thrive in the new digital services economy. Examples of both success and failure abound. Corporate leaders will ignore his words at their peril.
I'm still reading this book as it's quite detailed but not due to any technical detail, but just because of the very fact-based and solid principles that this book conveys.
Its a very educational read and hits a lot of key points. I've been a telco veteran for over a decade. So those from the industry will nod their head going Yep, thats right. Agree, Uh huh. etc etc. So for non-industry folks, it gives a very clear insight into the challenges and opportunities of the digital "tsunami".
A very very good and insightful book. I would recommend to others.
